World Metrology Day
May 20th, World Metrology Day, is the day that marks the anniversary of the signing of the Meter Convention of 1875. This agreement provides the basis for a coherent system of measurements throughout the world which are based on scientific discoveries and innovation, industrial production and international trade, as well as improving the quality of life and environmental protection at the global level.
The theme of the World Day of Metrology 2017 is Measurements in transport. This topic was chosen because transportation plays a very important role in the modern world. Not only we move, but it is transported the foods we eat, the clothes we wear, the goods that we use and we depend on, not forgetting the raw materials from which all this is made of. In order to do this safely, efficiently and with minimal impact on the environment the astounding range of measurements is required.
National Metrological institutions around the world are continually improving metrology by expanding and supporting new measurement techniques with higher levels of accuracy. This progress is essential to the new solutions in the transport sector, with the discovery of hydrogen fuel cell, vehicles on the electric drive and a new generation of passenger aircraft with more efficient fuel consumption.
National metrological institutions participate in comparisons coordinated by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in order to ensure the reliability of measurement results worldwide. BIPM also provides a Forum to the Member States, to tackle the new challenges of measurement. The International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) develops international recommendations whose aim is to align and harmonize the metrological requirements around the world in many areas, including transportation.
World Metrology Day recognizes and celebrates the contribution of all people around the world who work in intergovernmental and national organizations on matters of metrology for the benefit of all.
